La otoplastia es una intervención corta, con resultados inmediatos exitosos. Se puede realizar con anestesia local. Normalmente, un anestesiólogo está presente durante la intervención, para asegurar los neuroleptoanalgésicos. La intervención corrige los diferentes defectos del pabellón auricular que son muy frecuentes /orejas prominentes/. No es lo mismo para los casos de microtia que se debe a atrofia facial unilateral. En estos casos se necesita una intervención más complicada, con anestesia general y transplante de implantes de cartílago. La otoplastia se puede realizar cuando el niño haya cumplido los 9 años, porque en esta edad el desarrollo de la oreja como órgano ya ha terminado.
En la realización de esta intervención, los pacientes no se hospitalizan, unas horas después de la intervención ellos pueden irse, con un vendaje elástico en la cabeza. Sigue tratamiento con antibióticos y analgésicos (Depon [ingrediente activo: paracetamol], Lonarid [ingrediente activo: acetaminophen], pero no aspirina, en caso de leves dolencias. No se debe sentir dolor fuerte, en caso de sentirlo se debe al vendaje demasiado apretado y el mismo se debe relajar. Cuatro días tras la intervención se hace el primer cambio de vendaje y el paciente puede lavarse la cabeza. Tras días después de la intervención ya no es necesario llevar un vendaje. En las dos semanas siguientes se recomienda llevar una cinta elástica en la cabeza que cubra las orejas. Normalmente no hay suturas y la cicatriz que puede formarse queda detrás de la oreja.
La otoplastia se puede realizar cuando el niño haya cumplido los 9 años, porque en esta edad el desarrollo de la oreja como órgano ya ha terminado.
Es importante conservar el aspecto natural de todas las partes del pabillón auricular (hélice, antihélice, la concha auricular, tragus, antitragus). El pabillón auricular y la concha auricular no deben estar pegados al cuero cabelludo, el antihélice no se debe herir plegando el cartílago durante la intervención.
